Supporting the increasingly prominent doctrine and pan-European professional discourse that Architecture, embedded within the historical, urban, and/or built fabric of its time, has never been, nor may it ever be, neutral, Bureau Cube Partners, through the realization and presentation of this project, has once again affirmed that every contemporary architectural intervention which visibly interweaves with the architectural heritage almost unavoidably provokes a dilemma.
This sustained sense of unease finds its source in the evident absence of a theoretically grounded understanding of whether it is more sustainable to yield to the old, to surpass it, or to enable a stratified recording of layers, one that refrains from erasing the epoch and its attendant sequences, instead allowing them to be extended and integrated through mutual superimposition.
Following precisely this latter trajectory, the design team of the architectural studio Bureau Cube Partners developed, successfully presented, and after public review defended the proposal, positioning the project as a palimpsest in which the layers of epochs, in effect earlier inscriptions encountered as inherited parchments, remain visible, nurtured, and sustained.
Through their parallel overlapping, they generate a complex, tripartitely layered, heterogeneous context that fundamentally resists the trend-driven hegemonies of “quasi-contemporaneity.”
The heterogeneity of such a context, accordingly, emerges almost as an artifact, intelligible, professionally and disciplinarily legible, and carefully stratified, undoubtedly challenging, and deliberately constituted so as to invite a clearly profiled, theoretically and practically grounded, essayistically articulated critical reflection.
